Have you ever been into a store, only to find out that they’ve run out of the thing you came in to buy?

The store assistant assures you that stock is arriving in the next few days, and that they’ll take your details, put on aside for you when the delivery occurs, and give you a call.

The days, then weeks pass, and you hear nothing. In fact, you may have even forgotten about the order, and bought the product somewhere else.

Weeks later, the shop calls you to tell you that your order has arrived, but you no longer want, or need the item, so you tell them to put the stock back on the shelf?

It’s a common scenario, one that most retailers know all too well. That dreaded feeling in the pit of your stomach, when you realise you may have completely forgotten a customer.

Bio

You might be surprised to learn that my entrance into maternity leave planning and coaching did NOT begin with my own arrival at motherhood.

I had a decade of experience as a maternal health professional, but when I set out to plan my maternity leave as a self-employed consultant, I found…a whole lot of nothing.

I found some blog posts of what other women did and what worked for their business.

I read about what entrepreneurs in billion dollar companies did for their leave (oh hey Marisa Mayer!)

I came across dozens of generic “guides” that included sage wisdom like “plan ahead” without delving into much more.

What you will learn in this episode:

  • Learn more about Arianna's background, how she started her business
  • When is good time for baby when you run your own business?
  • It's time for a business break - How much time you need to take off
  • Learn more tips about breastfeeding

When you open a bricks and mortar store, you’re often forced to make a decision between a store with less foot traffic, but low rent, or the store with more foot traffic, and higher overheads.

With each of these choices, comes a tradeoff. The lower rent means that you can invest more money into stock, advertising and staff and grow your business at a steady pace. The higher rent option puts you in a position of having to achieve a higher turnover of products and sales, in order to stay afloat.

One of our Bringing Business to Retail community members, Jesse, opted for the lower foot traffic-lower rent store. She says “we’re on a shoe-sting budget, have great word of mouth and a good Facebook presence, but we're not in a good foot traffic location and need to inexpensively figure out how to reach grandparents who may not be wired as well as moms of 10& under”.

Every retailer would love to have more customers coming to their store, whether it’s online, or, into their shopfront.

As business owners, we spend a lot of time, and money, obsessing over the best ways to attract those customers.

If you’ve hear people talking about sales funnels and customer lifecycles, and you’re feeling a little out of your depth, today I’m going to break down exactly what they are, so that you can master YOUR store’s sales funnel and attract more customers

What’s a Sales Funnel?

Instead of using this term funnel, think about it as a small set of stairs, leading to your shop’s front door (virtual or otherwise).

Each step that a potential customer has to walk up, gets them closer to purchasing from you.

In text book speak, there are 5 steps that a person has to walk up, before they become a customer.

In the business world, have you ever found yourself super excited about a potential employee? They have every skill that you could have ever hoped for. It just that, they’re a bit, you can’t quite put your finger on it, but they just don’t seem right. On paper, this person is perfect, but still there’s a little niggle in the back of your mind

The other candidate doesn’t have the same skill set, but they just seem like they’d be a great fit.

So which do you choose?

Well, the better we understand ourselves and other people, the more successful we’ll be in dealing with people and situations; and getting it right. – that’s a direct quote from Sally Hogshead

She goes on to say “using psychology to your advantage in everyday situations, to ‘get’ people, to influence, help and support, to get your point across, in a way that's right for you, to better understand and shape decision-making, to motivate and manage people, and deal with conflict and most importantly to understand and manage our own impact on other people, is possible, when you know your own personality.

So, I ask you - when it comes to the ‘real you’, exactly how well do you know yourself?

For some many retailers, in fact, let’s face it, for so many people in any business, there is just never enough time to get through that to do list on any given day.

All of this leads to frustration, overwhelm, anxiety, and feeling constantly pressured, which all lead to a (sub) conscious a sense of failure.

When you’re in this mind-space, you find yourself short tempered, snapping at little things that shouldn’t bother you, taking our frustration at yourself, out on those around you.

Who hasn’t found themselves snapping at the poor cashier because they’d sold out of your favourite chocolate. Or writing a snarky email to a poor retailer because your order wasn’t delivered in a super- timely fashion

Whilst we know we shouldn’t lash out on the nearest person, it’s normal to want to vent our frustrations.

Meet Alfred*

A few weeks ago, I was talking to a retailer, let’s call him Alfred.

Alfred was frustrated at the fact that he just didn’t seem to have enough time. Between working his ecommerce retail store, dropping the kids at school and day care, and prepping meals, he was staring straight into the eyes of Overwhelm. With a capital O.
Overwhelm was such a presence in his life, that when we dug a little bit deeper into his situation, he confessed that he wasn’t getting any work done on his business. He was just packing orders, and drowning in ‘everything’

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that I’m a take action kind of person.

If you want to whinge about business and get sympathy from me, it’s likely that I’ll offer you some solutions, and expect that you’ll take action. And that’s exactly what Alfred and I did.

I recently went into a store, that felt like I was in a time warp.
The store sold “timeless” pieces for furniture.
All I could see was fat, puffy leather sofas (from the 90’s), brown wood (from the 90’s) and the desperate stench of “please buy something”.

Timeless does not mean time warp.

Seasons change, trends change, and people’s tastes change as they get older. So being on trend, with what’s happening externally in the design world, and internally, with your own target market, is the key to having the right inventory and great store turnover.

So how can you keep up with happening, what’s trending, and what your customer is actually looking for?

When it comes to online shopping, it can be a customer’s worst nightmare, seeing the same description over and over. When that happens, al a customer has left to choose on, is the price that you’re selling the product for, or what other products you happen to stock, that your customer might be looking for.

Two pretty tenuous reasons for a customer to shop with you, rather than your competitor, right?

So it’s time to stop copying manufacturers (or even worse, another website’s) product descriptions.

In this post-holiday lull, now is the time to review the products on your website.

Creating your own, unique and individual product description will not only delight your customers, as an added bonus, you’ll also get added “Google juice”, because Google LOVES unique content.

So here’s my 5 minute hack to make you a product description-copywriting ninja

In this week's episode you will hear what our guests answered in the past on Sal's great question "What makes you go wow when you walk into a retail store"

We have Dan Norris, Greg Van Borssum and Jessica Oman.

Dan Norris:

That's very difficult question. I don't shop very often. I am an online shopper and I like apple store, I don't know why. I think I am very heavenly influenced by design. If I see website and I need to buy something, I don't know if that is to common thing, but if I see the site that is really really well executed and really well designed and really good images, like product images, that is probably translate as a phisicaly as well.
