There’s a general consensus in the sales world, that the art of the “follow-up” is the most important part of the sales funnel.

Yet for some reason, as retailers, we seem to forget we too, are in the sales industry, and once someone walks out the door, it shouldn’t mean the end of the communication (and buying) process.

Retailers around the world, have lost the art of communicating, especially once a customer left the store.

Even worse, for those that do follow up, it’s often with an email, which is impersonal. Last week we talked about how email can be the most personal staff member in your business, today let’s talk about when you should just pick up the damn phone.

Here are my tips, to Mastering the Art of Customer Follow Up.

  1. If you sell a complicated product, make it a procedure that the sales person follows up to answer any questions.

How many times have you been into a store, and the sales associate has handed over your receipt, with the platitude, “If you have any problems, give us a call”.

You know it’s not sincere, because heck, if you have problems, you most likely WILL call, to vent your frustrations.

Instead of setting up the customer to fail, how about you set them up to succeed, right away.

As business owners, it’s easy to feel that automating something can be a saving grace when it comes to time saved, but it can also feel impersonal.

If you had a choice of a full time staff member to answer customers questions, or the option to automate, which would you choose?

Let’s take a look at how email can be the most personal staff member in your business.

Think about the time, effort and money, that it takes to on-board a new team member. Whilst you will have to put in some time, effort and potentially a small amount of money if you don’t already have an email service provider, your email systems won’t leave you, they won’t get sick, and they don’t get all ranty pants with your customers, if they’ve had a bad day.

I’ve always been organized and somewhat OCD, but after five moves including melding lives with my husband, dog and eventually son, I wasn’t able to be as organized as I would have liked to be. I needed a simpler solution and was tired of having stuff just for the sake of having stuff. While I always thought I had simple habits, all the excess clutter accumulated over time proved that maybe I wasn’t living so simply.

So I joined the simplicity movement and went on a decluttering spree. But somewhere between paring down half my wardrobe and kitchenware, I realized there wasn’t just one way to simplify life. While I would have liked to keep things somewhat minimalist, I found it was difficult to do with a family. And quite honestly, I liked having my son’s artwork on the kitchen walls and a few blankets and pillows on the couch to cozy up to.

What you will learn in this episode:

  • Why we accumulate too much stuff
  • Why merchandising forces us to buy stuff we don't need
  • Lori's tips on decluttering (not what you'd expect!)
  • How to organize your life (and your stuff)

As a retailer, you’re constantly trying to stay relevant, stay ahead of the trends and predict what your customer is going to want.

  1. Know what your customers like

Sounds obvious, right.

Most retailers ‘innately’ know what products their customers like, and what they don’t. What they choose to buy each season, is all “up here” (in their head).
However, when I ask retailers to go through their sales data and see what groups of items sell the best, every single time, they’re always a little surprised at what tops the list.

Thinking you know what your customers like and having the data to back you up, can change your store from a good store, to a great store.

  1. Have a team that accepts responsibility
Again, sounds like a no-brainer. Your team should know when something goes wrong, it’s their job to fix it, and to own the problem. If you have a team that runs to you every time there is a problem, or they’re quick to blame the customer, the pos system, the supplier, anyone or anything but themselves, it could be time for a bit of staff training.

The media loves spreading doom and gloom, when it comes to the economy, and retail. If you have a bad day, it’s easy to fall into the rabbit hole of despair and focus on anything negative that crosses your path.

But a poor sales day, does not have to equal a bad week, a bad month or bad year. It’s time to focus on the positive, so here are 10 facts about retail, that will instantly put you in a good mood.

  1. it’s in the mail

I did some research, and according to Mailchimp, if you have an ecommerce site, the industry average is a 16.75% open rate, with a 2.32% click through rate. In the Retail industry, its 20.96% open rate with a 2.5% click through rate.

Compare that to Facebook’s current organic reach of around 2-6%, you can see that your email list is the actually the most valuable piece of real estate.
Which would you rather put the effort into, content that get’s in front of 2% of your audience, or content that gets in front of 20%?

A little sass, a dash of smart-ass, and a whole lot of answers about the science of achievement, Ellen Goodwin is your middle-aged Action Hero, ready to provide you the swift kick in the @ss that you need to take action and empower yourself.

But Ellen wasn’t always an Action Hero.

A lifelong creative entrepreneur, Ellen didn’t know when to say when, and like many of us stayed too long in a career that was no longer fulfilling. When procrastination drove her to the brink of losing her business, Ellen woke up and began to ask “why.” Why wasn’t she in action? Why didn’t she have motivation? Why was she smack-dab in the middle of self-sabotage?

Ellen found that neuroscience held the not only the answers to her questions, but also the winning formulas for moving ahead. And thus an Action Hero was born with the power to harness natural human habits rather than fighting against them in order to create a game plan that squashes procrastination and enables us to get out of our own d@mn way.

Ellen will move into a new reality, supporting you every step of the way.

What you will learn in this episode:

  • Who are action heroes
  • Hear Ellen's story how she become real hero
  • How you can change other peoples world
  • Getting stuff done in 10 minutes, learn how
